A group of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and pro-democracy individuals, Citizen’s Movement, is set to picket the premises of the Auditor General’s office Monday, September 5, 2022.

The non-partisan political movement says its action is to drum home their displeasure on the Auditor General’s refusal to exercise its mandate on disallowance and surcharge.

In a letter issued to the Greater Accra Regional Police on its purpose for the picketing, it said the Auditor General’s refusal to carry out its mandated responsibility is a “direct violation of article 187(7) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (‘the Constitution) and the decision of the Supreme Court in Occupy Ghana v Attorney General [2017-201812 SCLRG 527.”

The action is to demand answers from the Auditor General and ask him to carry out the aspect of his responsibility which he has relegated.

The Regional Commander Greater Accra Regional Police Command Ghana Police Service Accra
Dear Sir,
NOTICE: CITIZENS’ COALITION TO PICKET OFFICE OF THE AUDITOR GENERAL, ACCRA I write for and on behalf of the Coalition for Democratic Accountability and Inclusive Governance (Citizens’ Coalition) to notify you of the group’s intention to picket the area outside the Office of the Auditor-General at Ministries Block 0, Liberia Road, Accra, on September [5], 2022, in compliance with Section 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

This action is being organized in protest of the Auditor-General’s blatant refusal to perform his constitutionally mandated duty to disallow unlawful public expenditure and surcharge persons implicated in the 2019 and 2020 Auditor-General’s reports, in direct violation of article 187(7) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (‘the Constitution) and the decision of the Supreme Court in Occupy Ghana v Attorney General [2017-201812 SCLRG 527.

We believe that the Ghana Police Service will recognize the importance of this issue given the current revenue challenges the country is facing. The above-mentioned event is planned for September [5], 2022, between 9am and 3pm.
