The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has questioned the motive behind the decision by the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to remove the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) from inspecting cargoes at the ports.
Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko Computer, says that decision has weakened Ghana’s drug interdiction efforts.
Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, in reaction to the NPP’s call for the dismissal of heads of institutions in the drug interdiction chain over recent cocaine seizures, Tanko Computer questioned the motive for the decision to take NACOC out of the ports.
“In any case, who removed NACOC from inspecting cargos at the port? Was it not NPP government? What was their motive for removing Narcotics Control?” he asked.
“That’s why I’m saying that they should shut up! They have no better history when it comes to these things and we are not going to learn anything from them,” he added.
His comments follow a press conference by the NPP led by its National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, on Tuesday, September 22, and demanded the sacking of some officials over the recent narcotic interceptions, including the 175 slabs of suspected narcotics seized at Abofu, a suburb of Achimota, the 866 parcels found hidden in gari at the Tema Port, and the 3.9 tonnes of cocaine linked to Ghana and intercepted in France.
Tanko Computer said the NPP should not lecture the current administration on drug enforcement, given its own handling of major cases like the MV Benjamin saga and the Eric Amoateng case.
“We’ve never seen that type, did they call for the heads of the institutional heads?” he asked.
