Lebanon’s Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Fouad Khazzaka has challenged some students at the Ghana School of Law to commit to high ethical standards of the legal profession to safeguard Ghana’s peace.
In a region bedeviled with political unrests, he touted Ghana’s commitment to upholding the Rule of Law.
However, he cautioned that Ghana’s political future will depend on the continued commitment of legal actors to integrity, justice and responsibility.
He was speaking at a ceremony where the Lebanese Community awarded scholarships to eight brilliant students from the Ghana School of Law, Makola for the 2025/2026 academic year.
His remarks stressed that society’s progress was anchored on rule of law and there was therefore the need for a consolidated effort to strengthen the legal space through provision of access to legal education for many law students.
In his address, Ambassador Fouad Khazzaka particularly lauded the historic fraternal ties between Lebanon and Ghana and shared belief of investing in young people to advance the fortunes of both nations.
The scholarship program, he noted, is a reflection of Lebanon’s firm belief in education as a catalyst for expanding knowledge towards development.
“This educational initiative reflects Lebanon’s historic vocation as a land of culture, knowledge and learning,” he said.
He underscored the need for the Rule of Law as it remains the foundation upon which societies and states are built.
The law, he says, “serves as a safeguard of justice, liberty and peace. As a legal professional myself, I am particularly pleased to support young people in this important profession.”
Ambassador Fouad challenged beneficiaries to pursue studies with diligence, integrity and determination while adding “your education will prepare you to become the lawyers, judges and legal scholars upon whom Ghana’s future will depend.”
Ambassador Khazzaka commended the Ghana School of Law for being a beacon in training legal professionals who continue to contribute significantly to Ghana’s democratic gains.
He called for more culture-based events to promote bilateral and human relations between the two countries.
“I am confident that initiatives such as this will continue to strengthen not only educational opportunities available to young Ghanaians, but also the bonds of friendship and solidarity between our two countries” he stated.
Mrs. Louisa Condobery-Asamoah, Acting Director, People, Talent & Culture at the Ghana School of Law, thanked the donors for their long-standing relationship with the Ghana School of Law.
She made a passionate call for a review in number of beneficiaries to support many more brilliant but needy students.
A representative of the Lebanese Community, Naaman Ashkar noted the need to promote Lebanese-Ghanaian cultural integration through educational programs such as these.
He urged the beneficiaries to study hard in order to be at the forefront of Ghana’s judicial system and become leaders to advance Ghana’s growth.
He also emphasized that while there have been expansion efforts in recent years to include more students, they will continue to explore new opportunities to support more Ghanaians through higher education.
One of the beneficiaries, Maame Ekua Otenewaa noted that the scholarship will help them receive the needed legal training to make them capable of transforming society when they finally became lawyers.
“The Lebanese community by their continuing gesture of motivating students of law to strive for academic excellence have showcased their adherence to upholding the rule of law in Ghana as they have recognized that law is the fibre that holds our society together and heals societal rifts,” she stated.
Since the inception of the programme in 2012, the Lebanese community has awarded similar scholarships to more than 600 students from the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC), the University of Ghana, the Ghana School of Law and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
These include students from law, journalism, public relations, film and television, language and performing arts disciplines.
In 2024, the program launched its official alumni network to pursue further humanitarian projects to support growing communities.
