Conflicting reports emerge about the fate of man allegedly beaten to death over GH₵2 transport fare

Reports about the death of a middle aged man allegedly beaten to death by commercial drivers and their conductors at Lapaz have been conflicting.

An eyewitness recounts the man was punched by one of the suspects at the back of his head and knocked his head on a concrete pavement.

According to Edmond Antwi who tweeted the incident, the unidentified man fell and died when given the punch and the driver with the help of others conveyed his remains to the hospital.

A day after the incident, the drivers with their conductors refused to open up on the incident saying they weren’t around at the time of the incident.

However, those confirmed they witnessed the incident said they could not comment about it.

The GPRTU office at the station was closed for the weekend.

A driver however said on condition of anonymity that “he was treated and discharged the same night.”

“He even came back to the terminal to pick a car to his destination and had the part of his head that hit the ground covered with plaster,” he added.

Edmond Antwi who tweeted the incident however held the man could not make it considering the rate at which he bled profusely after hitting his head on the pavement.

The man is said to have had an argument with a driver and his conductor over an increment in fares.

The passengers who were onboard Pokuase were returned to the station midway the journey when one passenger continued ranting over the GH₵2.00 increment they paid according to the eye witness who was also on the vehicle.

Upon reaching the station, a scuffle ensued when one passenger refused to alight, making other drivers and conductors at the station join in.

A taxi driver out of nowhere punched the man in the head from behind causing the head to knock the pavement.

The taxi driver who was scolded by bystanders carried the body of the man together with the help of others to a nearby hospital as narrated by Edmond.

The eyewitness had told GhanaWeb he couldn’t tell whether the matter was reported to the police or otherwise.

Meanwhile, officers at the Lapaz Police Station, which is a few hundred kilometres from the bus terminal, say they are yet to receive any reports about the incident.
