President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need to curb perennial flooding in the country once and for all, following the torrential rainfall that flooded various parts of the capital on Monday, June 29, 2026.

The President has reiterated an earlier call of relocating some major government institutions from the capital to create a new growth centre where people can live and work, as part of the long term measures being adopted to reduce pressure on Accra.

After undertaking an aerial tour of the flooded areas to assess the full extent of the situation, he announced a raft of steps being taken to safeguard residents and prevent further flooding.

The new city project to decongest Accra, President Mahama noted, is expected to span about 20 years, with land demarcation and plot sales anticipated to begin once designs are finalised.

The government would also provide roads, water and electricity infrastructure to support the new settlement.

In a proverbial remark, the President warned against the tendency to forget urgent problems once a crisis passes, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to address the flooding menace once and for all.

“We should not behave like the proverbial vulture that says it will repair its roof after the rains, only to forget about it once the weather clears. This time, we must act differently,” he stressed.

President Mahama commended the GAF, the police, the 48 Engineers Regiment of GAF, the Ghana National Fire Service, emergency response teams and NADMO for their swift rescue operations, saying footage of personnel carrying stranded residents to safety and deploying boats demonstrated a dedication that had “undoubtedly prevented an even greater tragedy”.

He also directed the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to support flood relief and mitigation efforts.
