A Senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Samuel Adu- Gyamfi, has added his voice to reasons why the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) might not retain the presidential seat after the 2024 election.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Wednesday, October 4, 2023, the political scientist said he agrees with the former Minister of Agriculture and flag bearer hopeful of the NPP, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, that, the NPP is not in a good place to contest to retain power next year.

“The morale is very low. The expectation of our activists around the country for a better life has not been realized so the NPP is not in a good place to contest to retain power next year,” Dr. Akoto has indicated.

Commenting on the statement, Prof Adu Gyamfi said the expectations of Ghanaians about this current NPP government have not been met, and people feel disappointed about the current government and are not so enthused about voting to retain the party in power.

Despite the economic failure of the government, he said the NPP is currently going through a period of divisiveness. A lot of the founding fathers of the party are grudged by some current happenings and decisions taken by the current crop of leaders of the party.

“The NPP is going through a metamorphosis. It is locked up in a cocoon of Asantes and Akyems. The party is going through a divisiveness orchestrated by the current president when he was then candidate Akufo-Addo.

“It has to do with a certain regime interested in holding unto power which is currently being opposed by some founding parties,” the political scientist espoused.

He continued that there are currently two factions in the NPP which can be witnessed in the fight between the Ashanti regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi and the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and flag bearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

However, the university Professor is making a clarion call on the National Executive Council of the party to hearken to the calls of the members of the party who have already started complaining about disunity in the NPP to save their image.
