Although without a cassock, the message from the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to flood victims in the Sene East, West and Pru East districts of the Bono East region were words that would have ordinarily come from an ordained man of God.

General Mosquito, as the NDC Chairman is known, has encouraged victims of the flood from the water spillage by the Volta River Authority, not to take their own lives.

He says God knows they possessed the tenacity to go through what they are in now, the reason this human induced disaster has befallen them.

Addressing the victims whilst presenting relief items on behalf of John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flag bearer for 2024, General Mosquito noted that “God will grant you the strength to prevail. He gives strength to go through every trial so do not poison yourself because your farm or home has been submerged.”

He assured them that the NDC and its flag bearer, together with God, was around to help them through their challenges.

“There is hope. Beyond the trial might come a success story. Be firm and with the presence of God, the NDC and President Mahama, we’ll support you with every challenge you’re going through,” he encouraged them in Twi.

Meanwhile, he told members of the NDC not to think the items were meant for them but persons who have fallen victim to the floods.

Fourteen out of 109 communities along the Upper Volta Basin affected by the spillage by the Volta River Authority have been completely destroyed.

Over 3000 people have been rendered homeless as a result of the floods in the Upper Volta Basin.

He told the NDC faithful not to think they have possession over the items than others since the gesture was not politically motivated.

“The items we brought are not meant to be distributed to NDC members. If you’re an NDC and your home or your farmland have not been flooded, you’re not part. They are meant for those in trouble,” he was emphatic.

According to him, disasters are not political and couldn’t have identified which homes and farms belonged to persons from one political party or the other.

“The floods were not led by any party colours which were pointing to the homes of NDC, NPP, CPP or the butterfly movement and which ones to take over or not. There is a disaster and we are here to help everyone in distress irrespective of the party he/she belongs.

“When we return on a party mission, I know our party members we’ll have our meeting with but this one is for the victims of the disaster,” he stated.

This is John Mahama’s second batch of items to the flood victims after presenting the first batch of the items to victims in the North, Central and South Tongu constituencies of the Volta region.
