The Police in Koforidua are investigating the demise of three technicians who suffocated to death after they were hired at the PBC workshop of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to maintain their fuel reservoir on Monday, October 9, 2023.

The three were among five technicians who were working on the reservoir when the unfortunate incident occurred.

It is unclear how the incident happened. However, eyewitnesses indicate one of the three, who have been identified as Mr. Ashie, Octopus, and Jonathan, was suffocating whilst two other colleagues attempted to rescue him and died in addition.

The two other colleagues who witnessed the incident reported the matter to the authorities.

A response team comprising officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Municipal Secretariat, Effiduase Police Command, Ghana Ambulance Service, and Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene to retrieve the bodies of the victims from the underground tank.

OnuaOnline is learning the remains of the three have been deposited at the St. Joseph’s Hospital Mortuary at Effiduase for preservation and autopsy.

“Around 11 o’clock, NADMO received a call about an incident at PBC yard. So, we had to rush there. When we got there, per our investigations, five gentlemen were contracted by the management of the facility to do some maintenance work on their reservoir tank containing fuel and unfortunately, three of them had drowned.”

“So we had to call other departments, thus the Ghana Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, and Ambulance Service so that we could extricate the bodies from the tank,” a Deputy Municipal Director of NADMO for New Juaben North, Daniel Kankam Twumasi had said.
