A tragic road accident at Nuaso Newtown on the Somanya-Kpong highway in the Eastern Region has claimed the lives of two young men, leaving residents of the Lower Manya Krobo area in shock and mourning.

The deceased have been identified as 20-year-old Ebenezer Nartey, a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider, and his friend, 23-year-old Tetteh Djornorbour, a driver.

According to preliminary police reports, the accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026. Nartey was riding an unregistered Royal motorbike from Somanya towards Kpong with Djornorbour as a pillion when the fatal crash occurred.

Police investigations indicate that upon reaching a section of the road at Nuaso Newtown, the rider allegedly attempted to overtake a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GG 632-14. In the process, the motorbike reportedly collided with the rear driver’s side of the bus, causing the rider to lose control.

The motorbike and its occupants fell onto the roadway and were ran over by an oncoming Hyundai truck, registration number GT 5603-23, driven by 32-year-old Abdallah Isaaka.

The truck was reportedly loaded with bags of rice at the time of the accident.

Eyewitness accounts described the impact as devastating. One of the victims reportedly suffered severe head injuries that left him unrecognizable, while the intestines of the other were said to have gushed out due to the force of the collision and the weight of the truck.

Both victims sustained critical injuries and were rushed to for emergency treatment. However, medical personnel pronounced them dead on arrival.

Their bodies were subsequently deposited at the St. Martin de Porres Hospital at Agormanya.

Police officers who visited the scene conducted preliminary investigations and conveyed the damaged motorbike and the two vehicles involved to the police station. The vehicles are expected to undergo technical examination by officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) as investigations continue.

Sources within the community disclosed that Tetteh Djornorbour had earlier accompanied his mother to the farm on the day of the accident before leaving to join his friend for what would become the fatal journey.

The gruesome nature of the accident has sent waves of grief across the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, with residents expressing sorrow over the loss of the two young men.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over the increasing number of commercial motorcycle-related accidents in the area.

Nartey was laid to rest on Tuesday June 23 amid an outpouring of grief from family members, friends and community residents.

Road safety advocates have meanwhile renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and greater caution among motorcycle riders and other road users to help curb the growing incidence of fatal crashes.
