The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects following an intelligence led operation at Akosombo-Bonya that led to the seizure of 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp and the exposure of an attempted GH¢100,000 bribery scheme.

According to a police statement, officers from the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID) acted on a tip off on Sunday, May 10, 2026, concerning narcotics allegedly stored in the area.

During a surveillance operation near Krobo Girls Senior High School, officers intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 and tracked it to a secluded location near Atua Government Hospital.

Police said the suspects were transferring sacks from the Hyundai truck into a Howo Zonda Tipper truck with registration number GN 7948-21 when officers moved in.

The initial group of suspects fled into nearby bushes, but police secured both vehicles and the suspected narcotics.

Shortly after the operation, a 39-year-old welder and Atua resident, identified as Solomon Tettey, reportedly approached officers and claimed ownership of the vehicles and the consignment, which he allegedly said was destined for Nigeria.

Police said Solomon Tettey then attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢100,000 to compromise the investigation.

According to the statement, officers feigned interest in the offer in order to secure evidence.

The suspect allegedly transferred GH¢90,000 via Mobile Money and handed over an additional GH¢10,000 in cash.

With support from the Regional Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and the Odumase Police, officers arrested suspect Solomon Tettey immediately after the transaction.

Two other suspects, identified as Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later arrested after reporting to the Regional Police Headquarters.

The suspects and all exhibits have since been handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (RCID) for further investigations.

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Bridger Opoku, said the Ghana Police Service remains committed to upholding integrity and intensifying efforts against drug trafficking syndicates in the region.
