The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate a traditional chief in the Eastern Region.
The alleged attempted assassination of the chief comes ahead of his first Royal Durbar scheduled for October 17, 2025, at Akyem Kwabeng in the Atewa West District of the Eastern Region.
The suspects, identified as Emelia Akua Asor and Seth Butuakwa, were apprehended in an intelligence led operation conducted by the police on October 11, 2025.
According to a statement from the Eastern South Police Command Public Relations officer, DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Emelia Akua Asor allegedly offered a sum of GHC50,000 to undercover officers posing as hitmen to kill the chief and a woman reportedly set to be installed as Queen Mother.
She also allegedly promised an additional GHC50,000 upon completion of the act.
Investigators say Asor directed her accomplice, Butuakwa, to assist with identifying the residences of the intended targets. He reportedly led officers to the homes of the chief and the woman and provided a photograph of the chief to aid the planned attack.
Police intelligence team acting on a tip-off infiltrated the suspects network leading to their arrest.
Both suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
They are expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
Pockets of chieftaincy disputes continue to threaten security in the Eastern region.
