Claims by John Dramani Mahama suggesting that the Electoral Commission (EC) has selected persons belonging to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as returning and deputy returning officers has been refuted by the EC.

The Commission says its recruitment processes for the officers for the upcoming polls was conducted in a transparent and fair manner without any compromises.

A press statement from the Electoral Commission Thursday, April 25, 2024 says it received 20,561 applications from the public after announcing the vacancy in the Daily Graphic on February 05, 2024.

“An in-house Committee was established to shortlist suitable applicants to be interviewed. For the information of the general public, all successful applicants at the interview have no less than 8 years of working experience with the Commission as Temporal Election Officials.”

“The allegation by former President Mahama that Ministers and DCEs were asked “to write the names of party apparatchiks and present them so that they would be appointed as the returning officers” IS NOT TRUE. The Commission rejects this unfounded allegation coming from the former President,” the statement read.

The EC’s response come on the back of claims by John Mahama that the government was flooding the Commission with its apparatchiks as returning and deputy returning officers for the December 07 polls whilst speaking at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The statement expressed the Commission’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the upcoming elections in a fair and transparent manner.

“As a Commission, we reaffirm our commitment to spearheading transparent, credible, and fair elections – upholding the highest standards of integrity as we commit to protecting the sanctity of Ghana’s electoral process,” it added.
