The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has said the power outage at Yilo and Manya Krobo was for safety reasons.

The Tema Region PRO, Sakyiwaa Mensah has explained in a press statement released Tuesday, August 2, 2022 almost a week after the power outages were effected.

She says there was an interference in the network which necessitated the shut down to prevent any harm due to the system interconnectivity, especially when “the extent of interference was unknown.”

“Safety became a Paramount issue and that necessitated the shut down,” she indicated.

The ECG PRO is hopeful of power restoration as soon as possible amid deliberations between stakeholders.

“It is hoped that power will be restored soon as stakeholders meet to discuss and seek resolutions, especially for safety of lives of ECG staff.

Providers of essential services such as hospitals are on the verge of crippling down, due to the cost of baring generator and fuel cost, a situation they indicate can result to a possible public health emergency.

Residents of Lower Manya and Yilo Krobo have experienced power outage for the past week following some metres and cables that were tampered. The ECG’s attempt to restore energy to the residents saw their staff being attacked by the residents, which they demanded absolute assurance of their safety before fixing the problem.

The chiefs in the area cautioned the residents to desist from the attacks on the workers to ensure the power is fixed for them.
