An August 26, 2023 statement made by President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after casting his ballot at the NPP’s super delegates’ conference indicated that the baton of leadership would not be handed over to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

That’s the view of the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

According to the NDC Chair, if the President had any faith in Bawumia to turn around the economic fortunes of the state, as his head of the Economic Management Team, Akufo-Addo would have been emphatic by saying “Bawumia is turning things around” rather than banking hopes in the “next leader.”

“Things are difficult. I’m the first to admit it. I’ve said it several times. I’m the first to admit and at the end of the day when the moment comes, Ghanaians will reflect on the best to get us out of these difficulties and get us to the next stage and that is the New Patriotic Party,” President Akufo-Addo told journalists on August 26 at the NPP headquarters after voting.

On Maakye Monday, November 6, 2023, on Onua TV, General Mosquito as the NDC Chairman is known, said, Dr. Bawumia was poached from the Bank of Ghana into politics because of his economic credentials which has proven to be shambolic.

Speaking in Twi, Asiedu Nketia said “Nana Akufo-Addo told us he was bequeathing the economic management of the country into his hands, the reason he brought him from the Bank of Ghana to become the Vice President.

“He (Bawumia) also said on a podium that he knew there was money in the country and there was no need to be borrowing unnecessarily to run the economy. That was the reason Ghanaians voted for them.

“Today they have testified that even the President has said the economy has collapsed and there is a new leader who is coming to fix things. I don’t think he was referring to the Vice President because he would have said my Vice is working things out.”

Asiedu Nketia continued that: “He is the head of the economic management team with the likes of Osafo Maafo praising him and all. And there is this record of the economy collapsed to its worst form. And since the days of independence, there has never been a time Ghana has defaulted on her debts to warrant international attention like now, to the extent of seizing our ambassador’s residence in London.

“So, if these are the handiworks of the Economic Messiah, what else should we be looking up to?” He quizzed whilst speaking to Captain Smart on Bawumia’s election as flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party.
