The latest national opinion poll organised by Global InfoAnalytics for the 2024 presidential election has revealed that religion is not likely to play any major role in people’s choice of candidate.

For the first time in the history of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, one of the two major political parties is presenting a Muslim candidate for the presidency, unlike the previous elections where all candidates have been Christians.

Some political parties and presidential hopefuls have started playing religious cards, with each trying to identify themselves with the sect they belong to woo their votes.

For instance, Alan Kyerematen of the Movement for Change had said during an Easter convention that Christians should vote for a Christlike candidate with a Christian background in order to lead the nation well.

Both the NPP and NDC have equally been making similar comments, although not from the candidates themselves, usually in the covert, to convince people of their faith to vote for their parties.

Meanwhile, the latest survey conducted by the Global InfoAnalytics shows religion will not be a major determining factor in the choice of candidate people will vote for on December 07.

“On whether religion will play any role on voters’ choice of candidate, 84% said religion is unlikely to play any role while 14% said it will play a role. In the previous quarter, nearly 24% said it will play a role, down 10%,” portions of the report contained.

The report, has, however, placed the National Democratic Congress’s John Dramani Mahama ahead of the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“The poll shows JDM leads with 54.3%, DMB, 34.9%, Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten (AKK), 7.5%, Nana Kwame Bediako, 2.3%, others, 1%,” the report stated.

“Using weighted polling data, JDM surges ahead with nearly 56%, DMB, 34% and AKK, 7%, Nana Kwame Bediako (NKB), 2% and others 1%. The poll shows that, among first-time voters, JDM leads DMB 52% to 33% and among non-first-time voters, JDM leads DMB with 55% to 35%,” the report added.
