The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has directed that the election for the position of Chairperson in the Ashanti Region be re-run within 14 days.

This is contained in a press release signed by the Chairman of the EDAC, Zacharia Tanko Musah dated July 24, 2025.

“The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has carefully considered the petition challenging the outcome of the Ashanti Region Chairperson elections held on June 30, 2025, and the evidence presented during the hearing. Having heard from the petitioner and all interested parties, and carefully weighing the evidence and arguments presented, we have decided that a re-run of the Ashanti Region Chairperson elections is necessary to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process,” the press release indicated.

It explained that, “Our decision is informed by critical irregularities that took place prior to and during the elections This includes the failure to adhere to some GJA constitutional provisions, culminating in the generation of a supplementary list on the day of elections, with the eligibility of some members on the supplementary list being challenged.”

The EDAC added, “Furthermore, a voter who was registered to vote in the Greater Accra Region was nonetheless allowed to cast her ballot in the Ashanti Region. Given the extremely narrow margin of victory—merely one vote—it is a reasonable proposition that these irregularities could have significantly impacted the outcome.

In light of these infractions, we have concluded that re-running the elections is the most reasonable, fair, and just course of action to restore the confidence of the members and ensure that the electoral process reflects the true will of the members.

The Committee therefore directed that, “The Ashanti Region Chairperson elections shall be re-run within fourteen working days (14) from the date of this announcement.

Accordingly, ” The GJA Elections Committee shall publish a full list of eligible voters in the dailies, and copies of the list shall be provided to all contestants at least 3 clear working days before the elections. No supplementary list shall be created.

The Committee urged all members to take keen interest in the implementation of these directives to ensure that the re-run elections are conducted with the utmost integrity.

“A full report detailing the committee’s findings, rationale and recommendations will be submitted to the secretariat and made available in due course,” they assured.
