Pressure group Election Watch Ghana has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rescind its decision not to participate in Friday’s rerun of elections in some selected polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency in the Greater Accra region.
The group says despite the concerns raised by the NPP, participating in the election is crucial for “building an active involvement of citizens in decision-making for a stronger democracy.”
The call comes on the back of the largest opposition party’s decision not to take part in the elections, citing inconsistency in due process by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).
According to the NPP, its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, won the December 7, 2024 elections and must be declared as such.
But Election Watch, in a statement Thursday, July 10, 2025, says boycotting the elections will not be the solution that the NPP seeks for the expectation of the people of Ablekuma North.
“Instead, we encourage the NPP to participate and work with other stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process is robust and credible.”
The group called on the two major political parties including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to join in its efforts to reform the EC “to meet constitutional, democratic and international standards.”
“We believe that a credible and effective electoral system is essential for Ghana’s democracy and we urge both parties to work with us to ensure that the Commission is given the necessary support and oversight to perform it’s functions effectively.”
