Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has asked the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

Various parts of the country have experienced power outages following the inferno at GRIDCo’s facility, a development which worsened an existing power fluctuation situation which the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had announced was due to transformer upgrades.

The situation has affected critical control systems at the Akosombo installation, and has been linked to the ongoing power fluctuations that has plunged several parts of the country into darkness.

In a post made by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on his Facebook page on Sunday, April 26, 2026, indicated that the Energy Minister’s decision to ask the CEO to step aside is to allow for a transparent investigation into the incident.

Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage to key infrastructure.

In Minister Kwakye Ofosu’s post, he further revealed that there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti region, in a related development.

The changes are understood to be part of broader efforts to strengthen operational efficiency and improve power distribution amid the current challenges in the energy sector.

Meanwhile, the Minister is expected to provide further clarity on the situation during a scheduled press briefing at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026. The briefing will focus on recent developments in electricity distribution, ongoing interventions, and measures being taken to stabilise the national grid.

In the meantime, Government has assured the public of its commitment to restoring uninterrupted power supply to the country and address the major challenges leading to the power disruptions.
