Electricity supply to parts of Accra has been disrupted following a fire outbreak at the GRIDCo substation at Mallam.
The affected areas include Lapaz, Mallam and Awoshie, where electricity supply has been disrupted following the incident.
Sources indicate that control boards and transformers at the facility were destroyed in the blaze, although GRIDCo is yet to officially confirm the extent of damage.
It is also unclear how long it will take to restore normal transmission through the substation.
The Ghana National Fire Service deployed personnel from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman stations to the scene. Their swift response prevented the fire from spreading to other installations within the enclave.
The cause of the outbreak is yet to be established.
GRIDCo is expected to conduct a technical assessment to ascertain the full extent of damage and outline measures for restoration, while investigations continue into the cause of the fire.
GRIDCo is responsible for Ghana’s electricity transmission network, moving power from generation plants to distribution companies. Its substations play a crucial role in regulating power flow, and damage to key equipment such as transformers and control boards often results in prolonged outages in affected areas.
