The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, together with the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), say the final phase of the Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project) and the transformer upgrade at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation will commence on 20th July 2026.

These projects form part of government’s commitment to strengthening electricity infrastructure to meet the growing energy needs of Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Energy on July 17 said, “For many years, Kumasi has relied on an ageing 19-kilometre single-circuit transmission line connecting the Anwomaso (K2) and Kumasi (Ahodwo) (K1) substations, even with the significant population growth and rapid commercial expansion.

Although the line has served the city reliably over the years, it has become increasingly overloaded and is no longer sufficient to meet the growing electricity demand of Kumasi and its surrounding communities.”

According to the Ministry, “The K1–K2 Project addresses this constraint by replacing the existing 364MVA single circuit transmission line with a modern double-circuit transmission line rated at 2 × 488MVA (978MVA). This will more than double the transmission capacity between the two substations, significantly enhancing the reliability, resilience and efficiency of electricity supply to Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region, while creating additional capacity to support future residential, commercial and industrial growth.”

It explained that the project has reached its final and most critical stage.

“As of today, 16th July 2026, approximately 90% of foundation works and 67% of tower assembly works have been completed. The remaining works involve dismantling the existing transmission line, erecting new transmission towers and stringing new conductors. Planned Outages To ensure the safe execution of these highly technical activities, the existing transmission line must be de-energised,”the Ministry indicated.

“Consequently, customers served by the Kumasi (K1) and Anwomaso (K2) substations may experience temporary and localised interruptions to electricity supply during scheduled construction periods. GRIDCo and ECG will issue advance public notices ahead of each planned outage, and every effort will be made to restore electricity supply before the evening peak demand period,” the Ministry further stated.

The Ministry announced that GRIDCo will replace one of the existing 66MVA transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation with a new 145MVA transformer.

“This upgrade will significantly increase transmission capacity, improve operational flexibility, reduce loading on existing equipment and further enhance the reliability of electricity supply across Kumasi and surrounding communities. Safety Measures Safety remains our highest priority,” the statement indicated.

The Energy Ministry urged all residents to stay away from designated construction areas and comply fully with all safety instructions issued by project personnel throughout the construction period.

“The final phase of construction is expected to be completed within three months. We appreciate the patience, cooperation and understanding of residents and businesses during this period. While these temporary interruptions may cause some inconvenience, they are essential to delivering a stronger, more reliable and higher capacity electricity network that will support the long-term development of Kumasi, the Ashanti Region and Ghana,” the Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry, Richmond Rockson, wrote.
