The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region has insisted that the voters’ register is not credible for the December 7 elections.
The party claims that the discrepancies in eight constituencies could affect the outcome of the polls. They made this known when a petition was submitted to the Electoral Commission after the protest in Koforidua.
Hundreds of NDC party faithful filled the streets of the Central Business District to express their displeasure at the Electoral Commission.
The large crowd, holding placards, echoed their unified demand for action. Every movement was accompanied by chants.
“We are expecting that Jean Mensa and the Electoral Commission will do the needful, and that is what we have presented to them. We are for justice and peace, ” Ransford Owusu Boakye, NDC Vice Chairman said.
Kojo Darko is member of the NDC Election Directorate. He said, “Across the Eastern Region, we found huge discrepancies in almost every constituency, clearly the world must know. There is no way the Electoral Commission would provide a final register that does not contain discrepancies.”
The National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, who led the Eastern Regional Executives to present the petition to the EC Regional Director, John Appiah Bafffoe, emphasized that peace can only be achieved if justice is served.
“There is a prerequisite for peace, which is justice. The hall mark of the Electoral Commission is credibility, you cannot have a credible election when the voter registration is flawed. We are calling on the EC as peace loving Ghanaians, we don’t want any mishap on the election day. That is why we have taken this initiative today
as responsible citizens of the country, ” he stated.
Mr Baffoe assured that the petition would be submitted for action.
Security at the Electoral Commission’s office was tight, as police personnel had a long day maintaining order during the protest and after.
