The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Kwetey, has urged members of the party to reflect their motivations for joining and supporting the party, warning that growing self-interest is undermining the NDC’s founding ideals.
According to him, a section of members of the party now view the NDC primarily as a vehicle for securing political appointments, contracts, and financial benefits, rather than as a platform for advancing collective national development.
He said this trend risks eroding the values upon which the party was built.
“Today we have many people who think the party is a means where they can get an opportunity to be able to get an appointment, or to be able to get some contract, or to be able to get some money. So, the party is a convenient vehicle and so many people do not even understand the values that we are supposed to embody,” he stated.
Speaking at a press conference on May 15, 2026 ahead of the commemoration of June this year, Mr. Kwetey stressed that many members actively “sing the Great NDC” while prioritising personal gain over service, adding that such attitudes weaken the moral foundation of the party.
He noted that some within the party have drifted far from its core principles and no longer embody its original ideology.
“They do not know what the foundations are and are all members singing the Great NDC while thinking only about what they can get,” he added.
Fiifi Kwetey further appealed to grassroots members and leadership alike to return to the party’s foundational purpose, insisting that the NDC must be seen as a “vehicle for the empowerment of the people”, not a “cash cow for personalities.”
“It is important to explain that it is not just the general public we are making an appeal to, we are making an appeal to the broad membership of our own party.
“Sadly, many of whom do not even remember some of these ideals. Many of who today, think this party is just a vehicle that allows us to get power and once we get power, we think about ourselves,” he explained.
He emphasised that rebuilding ideological discipline is essential for the party’s credibility and long-term relevance.
“Leadership means we must appreciate who we are, the wellspring that we are coming from, the foundations we stand for and the values we embody,” he said.
The General Secretary urged the young generations who have joined the party to be always be mindful of the party’s ideals and values.
“For the young generations that have joined this party, for them to understand that May 15, June 4 are not simply event that we commemorate because we want to commemorate, the very spirit that defines this party and that spirit is actually how this country can be transformed,” he noted.
