At the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, a three-storey accommodation which serves as a hostel has been razed by fire.

‘Father Hostel’, the facility, caught fire on the night of Thursday, July 25, 2024, getting the building damaged.

At least nine rooms have been burnt to rubble, leaving students devastated and frightening others staying adjacent the facility.

Although no casualty was recorded, at least nine students have lost all their properties leaving them no place to lay their head.

Victims recounted that the fire started in a single room before it quickly spread throughout the building, consuming their valuables within minutes.

Eyewitnesses noted that the KNUST Fire Department’s emergency number was initially unreachable, causing a delay of 30 minutes before they could respond to the incident.

The structural damage of the property has made the remaining portion of the building uninhabitable.

Meanwhile, the KNUST Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has responded by arranging for temporary accommodation for the affected students at the SRC hostel.

The council is also urging all students to adhere to safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
