A confirmed case of Mpox has been reported in the Akontombra District of Ghana’s Western North Region, sending a wave of concern through the community.

According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Joseph Appiah, health officials identified seven individuals with symptoms consistent with Mpox, and laboratory tests confirmed one positive case.

The news was announced by Mr. Appiah during a meeting with assembly members in Akontombra, where he urged residents to remain vigilant and prioritize their health. “We must take this situation seriously and work together to prevent further spread of the disease,” he emphasized.

Mpox, a contagious viral infection, can spread through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials. Symptoms include fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic rash that often spreads across the body.

In response to the confirmed case, the District Health Directorate is implementing measures to contain the situation, including active surveillance, public education campaigns, and isolating confirmed cases where necessary. Residents have been advised to practice good hygiene, avoid unnecessary physical contact, and report any suspected cases promptly.

The DCE has assured the public that the health team is working tirelessly to prevent further spread of the disease. “Early detection and prompt medical intervention are key in managing Mpox outbreaks,” he stressed.

As the situation continues to unfold, residents have been encouraged to remain alert and seek medical attention immediately if they experience any unusual symptoms.

The District Health Directorate will soon provide a comprehensive update on the overall health situation in the district, outlining preventive measures and preparedness strategies being implemented.
