The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described as fake a widely circulated notice purportedly issued by Cambodian immigration authorities ordering African nationals, including Ghanaians, to leave Cambodia by May 31, 2026, or face arrest and imprisonment.
In a press release issued on May 29, the Ministry said it had engaged the relevant Cambodian authorities and confirmed that the document circulating on social and traditional media platforms was not authentic.
According to the statement, the fake notice falsely claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and other African countries had been directed to leave Cambodia or risk arrest, imprisonment and financial penalties over immigration violations.
The Ministry explained that Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior had officially clarified that the notice was “completely untrue” and was not issued by any state institution in the Southeast Asian country.
“The Ministry wishes to assure the public that following diplomatic engagements with the relevant Cambodian authorities, it has been confirmed that the said notice is absolutely fake,” the statement noted.
Government also urged the public and media organisations to disregard the document and avoid circulating unverified information capable of causing fear and anxiety among Ghanaians living in Cambodia and their families.
Despite dismissing the notice as fake, the Ministry disclosed that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had previously expressed a desire to voluntarily return home.
It said the Government of Ghana, through its High Commission in Malaysia, which is accredited to Cambodia, had already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.
The Ministry added that arrangements are underway to support the return of an additional 76 Ghanaians currently residing in Cambodia who have also requested repatriation assistance.
The statement further assured the public that Ghanaian authorities are working closely with Cambodian officials to ensure the safety, welfare and protection of Ghanaian nationals in the country.
