John Dramani Mahama has promised to bring back the free sanitary pad distribution to female students in both basic and senior high schools should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) be given the mandate in the 2024 December polls.

The former President says the policy, although was mocked by then opposition, now government, was a well thought through initiative since the teacher unions have raised it as a concern.

John Mahama was having an interaction with some teacher unions as part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ when the concerns about menstrual hygiene came up.

“The provision of free sanitary pads for female learners in both basic and senior high schools was initiated under the erstwhile NDC administration. If you remember, our opponents, now in government, mocked us and called it “the pad loan”.

“For you the unions to have raised this as an issue in the concerns that you have raised to us means that our policy on sanitary pads was well thought through and needs to be looked at again,” he assured.

He explained further that the next NDC government was going to curb the infrastructure deficit by building more to de-congest the large class sizes.

Mahama explained that abandoned structures in the basic and senior high schools were going to be completed to ensure students have adequate places to use.

“The NDC policy of infrastructure development will again be pursued vigorously to de-congest the large class sizes. Abandoned infrastructure in the basic and senior high schools, including the famous E-blocks will receive priority attention under a new NDC administration,” he stated.
