Nana Yaa Akyempem Jantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has rejected claims by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as being the pioneers of free SHS.
She says free education for tertiary education is something the CPP introduced under its first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, making any claims by Akufo-Addo and the NPP as the brains behind the initiative a lie.
According to her NPP, despite lacking the blueprint to implement the policy, because it did not emanate from them, have failed to seek advice on how to run it properly, leaving the programme at its current abysmal state.
“The point is that, free SHS is not the blueprint of the NPP. It was started by the CPP under Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and because they don’t have the blueprint, and they don’t have the humility to ask, they just implemented it anyhow,” she said Thursday, October 17, 2024, on the BigIssue on TV3’s NewDay.
She went ahead to lament over the government’s reduction of all forms of public discourse to the free SHS, making her question the relevance of the policy to persons who are not benefiting from it.
“The NPP, when it comes to ‘I’m sick, they’ll say ‘we’ve done free SHS; I’m hungry, ‘we’ve done free SHS’; I don’t have money for fuel, ‘we’ve done free SHS’; the economy is bad, they say free SHS. Free SHS has benefited a portion of Ghanaians. What about those who are not benefiting from free SHS?” she quizzed.
