The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has cast doubts over the government’s ability to end illegal mining barely three months to the elections.
The illegal mining menace also known as ‘galamsey’, has become worse with water bodies being polluted and forest reserves being destroyed.
After promising Ghanaians and putting his presidency on the line, the CHRAJ boss has criticised the President for failing to tackle the menace which has destroyed Ghana’s environment with far-reaching consequences on the lives of the people.
This has caused many groups and Civil Society Organisations calling on the President to place a ban on small-scale mining. This includes some groups of health professionals, the Ghana Union of Traders Association, the Media Coalition against Galamsey, amongst others.
Taking to his X page, the NDC’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi stated that he is certain the NPP government, with some few months to exit office, cannot curb the ‘galamsey’ menace.
According to him, the State of Emergency which is being demanded from the President on the canker should rather be declared by Ghanaians on the NPP and count the government down to December 07 to vote them out of power.
“If the NPP could not fight Galamsey in 2,805 days (i.e since 7th January 2017) with Operation Vanguard, GALAMSTOP etc., they can certainly not fight Galamsey in 86 days whether or not a state of emergency is declared.
“Ghanaians should simply declare a state of emergency on the NPP for destroying our water bodies, forest reserves and lands and vote them out on 7th December, 2024,” he posted.
