With over 70 per cent of Ghanaians being associated with Christianity in one way or the other, the doctrine of a ‘Saviour’ is well resonated by many who are accustomed to the teachings of the Holy Bible.

Jesus Christ, is the one that comes to mind on the account of the topic. However, flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed the need for Ghana to get a saviour after the Christ, to redeem, not the souls of mankind, but the nation itself.

According to him, the abysmal performance of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration leaves nothing to be desired and the moment Ghanaians retain the NPP in power, the deeper the ditch the nation will sink in.

As part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Central region, John Mahama told residents of Nyankumasi Ahenkro in the Assin South district of the Central region that, if the NDC is not voted to power to deliver the country, the citizenry will wallow in economic mess.

Speaking in Twi, he said “the ‘Saviour’ that God said would come was Jesus. But Ghana needs a saviour in 2025 to deliver us from the hardship that’s engulfing us.

“And I want to assure you that the NDC has the men and women I know are competent. So, if you vote for those people, they can help me to fix our broken economy to bring Ghana on its feet again.”

The former President was lamenting over how the NPP government has collapsed Ghana’s cocoa industry which hitherto was doing better but now performing on a decline.

He feared Ecuador may soon take over Ghana as the second largest producer of the cash crop globally.

Mr. Mahama attributed the challenge to the free fertilizer for cocoa farmers which the current administration has abolished.

“We harvested 960,000 metric tonnes of cocoa in Ghana but in NPP’s time, you need to buy the fertiliser yourselves. It wouldn’t be given out for free anymore so our 960,000 metric tonnes have dropped and we should even pat ourselves if we get 600,000 metric tonnes this year.

“The cocoa sector is collapsing because the trees are dying since there is no fertiliser to apply.

“There is a country called Ecuador who were nowhere near our production capacity but they are now producing over 300,000 to almost 400,000 tonnes and Ghana has been dropping consistently.

“If the NDC doesn’t come to save our cocoa from collapsing, Ecuador will overtake us as the second largest producer,” he preached to the residents in Twi.
