The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) are currently investigating a disturbing video circulating on social media, in which visiting Black Americans are alleging they were kidnapped and extorted in Accra by some individuals claiming to be police officers.
In the said viral video, a supposed American lady visitor in a white dress and a white hair narrated an ordeal of being kidnapped by three masked men suspected to be police officers.
The lady in the video said “they covered their licence plates and didn’t have name badges. As soon as they decided to take us, they took our phones so that we can’t record or contact anyone”.
A statement from the GTA signed by its Corporate Affairs Director, Bright Asempa Tsadidey, said “the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have launched investigations into the matter, and the public will be updated upon completion of their work”.
The GTA assures visitors and the general public that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination, with reinforced security systems in place to guarantee safety and comfort throughout the festive season.
“As Ghana welcomes thousands of visitors for this year’s December in GH, GTA assures all travellers and the general public that the country remains a safe and trusted destination. Our security systems—supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners—have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season.
“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations. Visitors who require assistance or wish to make enquiries may contact GTA on 0579579019, 0307007100, or reach us via WhatsApp on 0546352240.
“The GTA assured those from the diaspora that “Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety”.
