Ghana is set to make maritime history later this month with the arrival of the largest bulk carrier ever to berth in West African waters.
The MV CBS Years, a colossal vessel with a deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 300,000, will be officially welcomed at the Port of Takoradi on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The landmark event is being organized by the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) in collaboration with Cosco Shipping Lines and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The arrival of the cape-size vessel is hailed as a significant business turning point for GMC, aligning with its ambitious target to ship 10 million tonnes of manganese in 2026.
“This historic call at Takoradi will substantially increase bulk export shipments through the port. It will boost export revenues for GPHA and contribute meaningfully to the national economy,” the company stated in its press statement issued on January 12, 2026.
Extensive preparations have been underway to ensure the safe and efficient handling of the giant vessel. GMC sponsored selected GPHA marine pilots for advanced simulation and berthing training in China, specifically designed to replicate the hydrodynamics and navigation of cape-size ships.
GPHA has also developed a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to guide the operation.
In an added layer of precaution, GMC and GPHA engaged a third party to conduct a full risk assessment. This includes digital simulation of berthing and unberthing maneuvers, complemented by real-time UAV (drone) surveillance during operations to ensure maximum safety and monitoring.
The inauguration ceremony on January 27 is expected to draw senior government officials, industry leaders, international shipping partners, and key stakeholders from the maritime and logistics sectors.
The event will not only celebrate this logistical achievement but also underscore Ghana’s commitment to advancing port infrastructure, professional expertise, and cross-sector collaboration for the long-term growth of maritime trade.
GMC reaffirmed its dedication to supporting sustainable national economic growth through such strategic investments and partnerships. The arrival of the MV CBS Years stands as a testament to Ghana’s growing capabilities and its rising profile in global maritime commerce.
