Customers in parts of Greater Accra and Eastern Region are to experience temporary water disruptions as the Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) announces a planned maintenance exercise on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines.
The works is scheduled from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The exercise will involve the isolation and replacement of weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines as part of the company’s efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply to customers.
According to Ghana Water Ltd, routine engineering assessments identified more than 300 metres of deteriorated pipeline sections requiring urgent replacement to prevent major failures, reduce water losses and ensure uninterrupted water delivery.
To enable the works to be carried out safely, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down, while five sections of the transmission pipelines will be isolated for replacement.
Affected areas include communities across the eastern parts of Accra and surrounding areas, including Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Tema Metropolis, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua and Teshie.
Other affected communities include Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns.
Ghana Water Ltd said its technical teams will work continuously throughout the three-day period to complete the replacement works on schedule and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible
“The Company sincerely regrets the inconvenience this temporary interruption may cause,” GWL stated.
The company has advised residents in affected areas to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the commencement of the maintenance works and use the available water judiciously throughout the period.
Critical institutions, including hospitals, health facilities and other essential service providers have been encouraged to make the necessary contingency arrangements as Ghana Water Ltd says water tankers will be deployed to support selected critical institutions during the maintenance period.
GWL explained that the intervention is a strategic investment aimed at reducing pipeline bursts, minimizing emergency shutdowns, improving operational efficiency and strengthening water supply reliability within the Tema and eastern corridor areas of the Greater Accra Region.
The company has apologized for any inconvenience caused and assured the public that updates on the progress of the works will be communicated through its official channels, with notification to be issued once normal supply is fully restored.
