The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) has reiterated its dedication to empowering local communities through decentralization.

At a high-level meeting with development partners and stakeholders, sector minister Ahmed Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in driving Ghana’s decentralization agenda forward.

The gathering, held at the MLGCRA Conference Room on Monday, March 2, 2026, provided a platform for reviewing progress made in implementing decentralization policies and identifying areas for improvement.

Ibrahim highlighted notable achievements, including the launch of the “Clean Up Ghana” initiative, which aims to promote cleanliness and sanitation across the country.

The Minister also announced plans to introduce a performance scorecard for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with a focus on sanitation as a key performance indicator. This move is expected to enhance accountability and drive progress in local governance.

Other key initiatives underway include the finalization of the National Decentralization Policy and Strategic Framework (NDPSF-2026-2030) and the revision of the National Urban Policy (NUP) and Implementation Plan (IP-2026-2036). These efforts aim to strengthen local governance, improve service delivery, and promote inclusive development in Ghana.

Mr. Ibrahim also highlighted the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, citing the recent disbursement of GH¢100 million as a Responsiveness Factor Grant to support Assembly Members.

Additionally, the Ministry is set to increase monthly allowances for Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers, recognizing their invaluable contributions to local development.

The meeting was attended by representatives from development partners, including the Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and the Deputy Swiss Ambassador. Rita Odoley-Sowah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, also participated in the meeting.

As Ghana’s decentralization efforts continue to gain momentum, the MLGCRA remains committed to working with stakeholders to build a more inclusive and prosperous nation.
