Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused government of putting the democratic principles of the nation at threat.
He says the John Dramani Mahama-led administration is undermining free speech and dissent, which are part of the core tenets of a democracy.
During an NPP executives delegation from the Bono region’s visit to his house on Saturday, April 18, 2026, to express appreciation for his support during the arrest and detention of party member, Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando, Dr. Bawumia said freedom of expression is increasingly being sacrificed for political convenience.
He criticised what he described as the growing use of state security agencies to intimidate political opponents, warning that such actions risk eroding the country’s democratic gains.
“Ghana’s democratic credentials are under attack. Freedom of expression is being sacrificed for political convenience,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia urged party members and communicators not to be intimidated by the arrests, but should rather remain resolute and outspoken and engage the public with facts while holding the government accountable.
On his part, National Organiser of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye, who led the team to the former Vice President’s house assured him of their steadfastness, indicating their willingness to put the government on its toes.
Meanwhile, Nana Boakye disclosed that the party members are planning a protest on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, under the theme: “Yensuro Ahunahuna Demo”, to protest what the party describes as attacks on free speech and democratic governance.
