A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has stated that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) government is currently not doing well regarding the management of the country, as evident in the poll results secured by the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

His comments come on the back of the latest Global InfoAnalytics poll, which puts John Dramani Mahama ahead of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The unweighted poll results put John Mahama at 54.3 percent, while Dr. Bawumia secured 34.6 percent. Leader of the Movement for Change Alan Kyerematen had 7.5 percent, while the New Force’s Nana Kwame Bediako polled 2.3 percent.

Reacting to the development on TV3 News 360 on Monday, April 8, Dr. Asah-Asante noted that the poll, although it is “early days yet,”  maintained that the government has not done well.

“It is early days yet as we get closer to the election. But let us also remember all these things are factors that go a long away to influence voters one way or the other. So, you don’t want to take this type of study for granted.

“Take it or leave it the government is not doing well that is a fact and don’t just depend so much on the economy to decide who they want to give their vote to,” said Dr. Asah-Asante.

Also, the poll results showed that about 48 percent of participants supported John Mahama’s 24-hour economic policy. Twenty-nine percent indicated that Dr. Bawumia’s digitalisation agenda would influence their vote.

The senior lecturer further noted that “it is interesting that the study pointed out about the 24-hour economy,” but underscored that voters find it “difficult to understand” the policy.

This, he said, is because former President Mahama and his party have yet to provide voters with “the full details” of the 24-hour economy.

“But that aside, you realise that the economy is a critical index for voter choices in Ghana,” he stated.
