The Ojobi District Police Command has been besieged by hundreds of women whose cooking utensils have gone missing.
This follows the arrest of Mumuni Abubakar, a scrap scavenger who is suspected to have stolen cooking utensils from homes in the Akoti and Ojobi communities all in the Gomoa East district of the Central region.
His arrest follows series of complaints from women in the Akoti and Ojobi communities about their missing cooking utensils. Over 200 cooking utensils have been reported missing by women in the community.
At the point of his arrest, pots of various sizes including those that still had food residues were found in his possession.
The missing of cooking wares in the two communities became rampant in the last one week. In some instances, cooking pots that contained food and were still on fire went missing to the dismay of residents.
Following this arrest several women from the communities thronged to the Ojobi police station to either identify their wares or lodge an official complaint to the police.
Speaking with Onua News’ Akwasi Addo, some of the women said their cooking wares were stolen from their porch and kitchens rendering them incapable to continue their cooking businesses.
“He took my coal pot and the big cooking pot I use to prepare gari and the one I use to prepare kenkey. They have taken everything and they don’t take them from outside. They enter into your porch to steal them and they have been doing that for some time now,” one woman lamented.
“He took six of my trays. I don’t even have a single utensil to cook and sell,” another added.
Following this development, residents have called on authorities to get rid of all scrap dealers from the enclave believing that their presence fuels some of these acts.
