In a concerted effort to strengthen vocational skills and entrepreneurship, the Government of Ghana has extended significant support to young entrepreneurs in the North East Region through the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP).

This initiative marks a pivotal step towards fostering economic empowerment and sustainable development in the region.

Over 300 young men and women in the North East Region have received crucial support under the NAP. This support includes access to industrial sewing machines, specialized tools and equipment tailored to various trades such as tailoring, dressmaking, hairdressing, carpentry and electrical work. These resources are designed to significantly enhance the productivity and income-generating capabilities of the beneficiaries.

During the handover ceremony, the North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia, addressed stakeholders and beneficiaries, emphasizing the broader impact of the initiative.

He urged the beneficiaries to view the tools not merely as instruments for personal gain but as opportunities to mentor and train other young people in their communities.

“These tools are not just for personal gain. We urge you to use them to train and mentor other young people in your communities. By sharing your skills, you will contribute to the overall development of the Region and create a brighter future for all,” Minister Tia stated.

The North East Regional Coordinator for the National Apprenticeship Program reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing ongoing support to eligible individuals. This commitment underscores the government’s dedication to expanding the program’s reach and ensuring its lasting impact on the region’s economic landscape.

The Minister reiterated that the NAP is open to all Ghanaian citizens, irrespective of political affiliation, ensuring that all eligible entrepreneurs receive support when their time comes. He cautioned beneficiaries against selling the provided tools, emphasizing their intended purpose of skill development and economic empowerment.

The beneficiaries expressed profound gratitude for the government’s support, highlighting the timeliness and potential of the initiative to transform their lives. “This support is timely and will go a long way to change my life,” said Zaria, a beneficiary and aspiring dressmaker. Yidana, a young carpenter, added, “With these new tools, I can expand my business and train more apprentices in my community.”

The National Apprenticeship Programme is a key component of government’s strategy to address unemployment and skills gaps among the youth. It aims to provide practical, hands-on training and mentorship opportunities, enabling young Ghanaians to acquire marketable skills and start their own businesses.

The program focuses on various sectors, including agriculture, construction, manufacturing and services, aligning with the country’s economic priorities. Through the National Apprenticeship Program, the Government of Ghana is making a strategic investment in the future of its youth, fostering entrepreneurship, and building a skilled workforce that will drive sustainable economic development in the country.
