The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has disclosed that an investigation has been launched into the Hamile explosion to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the Minister, the findings of the investigation will inform government’s next line of action.
Addressing Parliament on November3, the Minister said it would be premature to draw conclusions about the cause of the explosion at this stage.
“I wish to assure this House that the incident is currently under investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion. At this stage, it will be premature to draw conclusions about its cause or the events that led to it. The Ghana Immigration Service will communicate further developments as more verified information becomes available,” he said.
He assured the House that security agencies are working together to thoroughly examine the incident.
“Mr Speaker, whilst investigations continue, the security agencies will continue working with relevant agencies to ensure that the circumstances of this unfortunate incident are thoroughly examined and that any necessary measures arising from the findings are duly considered,” he stated.
Mr Mubarak stressed the need to prioritize the safety of security officers manning the country’s borders.
“We must remain mindful that the security of our borders depends not only on the courage and commitment of our officers but also on the measures put in place to protect them as they undertake their duties,” he added.
Background
Hamile is a border town in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region, sharing a boundary with Burkina Faso. It serves as a key entry point and is manned by officers of the Ghana Immigration Service and other security agencies.
The explosion, which has raised security concerns, reportedly affected officers on duty at the border. One Immigration Officer died with another seriously injured.
The Interior Ministry says it will make the findings of the investigation public once verified information becomes available.
