General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for reducing cocoa producer price per bag for cocoa farmers.
Government as part of a raft of measures to ease the cocoa sector crisis announced on Thursday, February 12, 2026 the reduction of cocoa producer price bag from GH¢3,625 per bag to GH¢2,587 per bag.
Speaking on the matter in an exclusive interview on TV3, Friday, February 13, 2026, Justin Frimpong Kodua explained that the decision will create misunderstanding between cocoa farmers and the buyers.
He noted that a contract has already been established between cocoa farmers and buyers on the already existing GHC3,625 price and produce have been sold at such prices, hence the reduction of the price will create a fracas between cocoa farmers and buyers.
“It has created chaos in the coca industry. Now there is a serious fracas between the purchasing class and the farmers. Because I gave my produce to you at GHC3,600 so I am expecting GHC3600 and it is a contract between the two of you.
“So, now that you have reduced the price to GHC2,500 what message is the purchasing class going to tell the farmer?” he questioned government.
According to him, the reduction in the cocoa price per bag is a low incentive to farmers which will compel them to sell their farm lands for illegal mining activities.
“At this point that government is creating low incentives for cocoa farmers to go into farming then you are also saying that at the end of the day you are going to encourage people to go into illegal mining.
“Is that the state that government wants to create? Did government think about it? In their attempt to reduce the cocoa prices, it is going to force farmers to sell their lands for illegal mining,” he said underscoring the need for government to incentivize cocoa farmers.
The NPP General Secretary claimed that the NDC government have failed in the cocoa sector and only destroying the sector withs its current measures announced.
