Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for the back-benchers in Parliament to be given a special day to dominate the debate in the House.

He made this statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, where he argued for a day to be set aside for the newbies of the House to to make their statements and dominate the legislative debate.

The seasoned MP who has been part of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th parliaments of the 4th Republic also stressed that, the members who get the opportunity should offer constructive, alternative solutions not just commentary.

“Mr. Speaker, we need to have a dedicated time for the political opposition for constructive alternatives not just commentary,” he stated.

“Mr. Speaker, I have said it repeatedly that the Day the Parliament of Ghana will sit right, Ghanaians will smile because a lot of the wrong in this country is because Parliament sits and allows it. Why are we having problems with debt?” He quizzed.

“Forgive me Mr. Speaker, I heard President Nana Addo Dankwa in Brussels lamenting about excessive borrowing and what Debt Exchange has done to him at the dark hour because the Parliament of Ghana failed to limit him and remind him that he has the powers but shouldn’t’ borrow excessively.”

He entreated back-benchers in Ghana’s Parliament to embrace learning in order to better appreciate the issues and master the standing orders of the House.

“Mr. Speaker, I wholeheartedly support that we give back-benchers an opportunity.
When they bring reports to this chamber, how many back-benchers or even front-benchers want to read the report?

“Please, when they bring the report we should go through in order to understand what is in the report. So back-benchers must be willing to learn,” he admonished.
