Residents of Blekese West in Nungua are facing significant challenges following heavy rainfall that occurred overnight on June 3, 2026, causing damage to a gutter and part of a nearby bridge.
The affected section of the bridge has reportedly collapsed, making it difficult for residents to cross safely. As a result, many people are forced to jump across the damaged portion of the bridge to reach the other side.
This situation poses a major risk, particularly for elderly residents and others who may not be physically capable of jumping.
According to Gabriel, a resident, who lives closer to the bridge, the damaged bridge serves as the main route connecting the community.
While an alternative route exists through a nearby street, it requires a much longer walk, creating additional inconvenience for commuters and residents.
Community members are calling on the relevant authorities to urgently assess the damage and undertake repair works to restore safe access and prevent possible deaths.
