Richard Amo Yartey, Director of Inspectorate at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that the nationwide death toll due to the devastating floods on Monday, June 29 has risen to 34.
He noted that out of the number, 12 persons have been confirmed dead in Accra.
According to him, the nationwide number could increase after NADMO completes verification of missing bodies.
“The death toll in Accra is 12, across the country is 34 but it could go up. If we did the matching and realise that some of the people missing have been found dead, then the death toll will increase and those listed as missing will reduce,” he stated.
Speaking in an interview on TV3’s Ghana Tonight, Thursday, July 2, he explained that NADMO officials are still working assiduously to retrieve missing bodies as well provide relief for the affected victims.
“As I speak to you now the warehouse is busy moving supplies to the distressed. Relief is across the country, we are going to send relief everywhere,” he said.
Mr. Amo Yartey said the floods which occurred within seven regions across the country displaced 89, 736 persons in total.
Greater Accra leads with 54,712 people affected, followed by the Central Region with 21, 882 persons being displaced.
