Hosts Ivory Coast have qualified to the quarter-finals of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations after defeating defending champions Senegal 5-4 on penalties.

The Round of 16 clash at the Stade Charles Konan Banny on Monday, January 29 ended 1-1 in full regulation time.

Habibou Diallo had put the Teranga Lions ahead in the first half, putting the champions on the path of their third successive quarter-final qualification.

However, the hosts had other ideas in the second half as Franck Kessie equalised for the Elephants to take the match to extra time.

With no goals scored in the 30 minutes of play, center referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho sent proceedings to the shoot-outs.

Former Chelsea FC stopper Edouard Mendy failed to stop any of the kicks as it ended 5-4 in favour of the two-time champions.

They will next play the winner of the Mali-Burkina Faso tie for a place in the last four.
