The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has called on security personnel deployed to Bawku and its surrounding areas not to abandon their posts.

He said they should request additional logistical support to combat the ongoing conflict in the region if they feel overwhelmed.

His comments follow the tragic loss of lives of two police officers on Sunday, April 13 2025 in Bawku.

In an interview with 3FM Sunrise with Noble Crosby Annan on April 14, the Minister emphasized the critical role of security forces in maintaining peace and urged them to remain steadfast despite the challenges.

“You were recruited into the security services because there’s a need for you when there’s a conflict, so I don’t think calling to be transferred from a conflict area is the way to go since that is where you are needed the most.” He said.

The Regional Minister, nonetheless, asked the security personnel to desist from endangering their lives in their quest to combat the rising tensions.

“You are in the conflict areas to ensure peace and protect lives, but not to your peril. I suggest the security officers should be asking for the needed security equipment to protect themselves.” The Minister urged.

He reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and security personnel.

“We, as the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), will continue to ensure that the needed security equipment is provided. The Interior Minister brought some last week, but unfortunately, they are inadequate.”

The Bawku conflict remains one of Ghana’s most persistent security challenges. Without sustainable peacebuilding, it risks further destabilizing the region. A mix of military deterrence, dialogue, and development is needed for lasting resolution.
