The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has addressed issues relating to a viral video that shows a confrontation between himself and New Patriotic Party (NPP) agents at the Legon Campus voter registration center.
The incident, which has stirred significant public interest, occurred when Dumelo was visiting the center to express gratitude to first-time voters.
Dumelo explained that he was at the center to thank and take pictures with the individuals who had come out to register for the upcoming general election.
According to Dumelo, while he was interacting with the voters, NPP agents approached him and claimed that his actions were not permitted, without providing any valid reason or explanation.
“The NPP agents’ current position in government seems to have given them a false sense of authority,” Dumelo stated, “leading them to believe they can prevent me from interacting with first-time voters.” he told host of Yen Nsempa, Nana Yaa Brefo, co-hosted by Isaac Ekow JB on Onua FM, May 30.
The NPP agents insisted that this was not allowed, which led to a heated exchange.
“Sometimes the students like to engage with me,” Dumelo said.
“On one such occasion, a student wanted to take a picture with me, and the NPP agents said it wasn’t allowed. So, the place got heated after that.”
Dumelo emphasized that his presence at the registration center was not for political purposes but to show gratitude to the new voters.
“I was not there to do politics. I was there to show gratitude to the first-time voters for coming to register and hopefully eventually vote,” he explained.
He further criticized the NPP agents’ actions, suggesting that they were an attempt to hinder effective engagement with the electorate.
“I think they did this because they know such engagements are effective.
They wanted to stop me from engaging with them and taking pictures, which doesn’t make sense because the current NPP MP, Lydia Alhassan engages with them.”
