Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would secure a parliamentary majority if elections were held today, arguing that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been unable to fulfill key promises to Ghanaians.

He claimed that the reduction in cocoa prices is a major shift from the promise made to cocoa farmers, noting that the repeated increases in electricity tariffs amounts to government deceiving Ghanaians

Addressing the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) executives on Wednesday, March 18 in Parliament, the Effutu Member of Parliament emphasised that the party’s chances of winning the 2028 elections will depend on the collective efforts of its members.

“We all know what is going on in the economy now. Our friends have deceived the entire nation, the promise of increasing cocoa prices to GHC6000 per bag, not only have they failed, they have rather reduced the price of cocoa.

“Throughout Akufo-Addo’s 8 years, go and check PURC. In 2018, electricity tariffs were reduced. Within a year, they have increased electricity tariff to almost 30%. But even in reality, the tariff adjustment is costing Ghanaians more than the 30% on paper,” he stated.

He added: “We are going to charge through the storm and like I indicated some few days ago, if elections are held today, NPP will be in the majority but that would also require hard work and loyalty.”

He also encouraged TESCON members to reject tribal politics and resist what he described as propaganda from the NDC.

Afenyo-Markin added that the NPP values loyalty, hard work and sacrifice.

He cited the party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, as an example, stressing that tribal background does not determine one’s role or contribution to the party’s success.

“NPP believes in hard work, industry, loyalty…Dr. Bawumia himself is not from a major Akan tribe per say, it is his loyalty and hard work that has earned him that privileged position as a leader of this great party.

“So, if you are here and you are from a small tribe and ethnic group, don’t let them come with their propaganda,” he stressed.
