The Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Shri Narendra Modi, has today, Thursday, July 3, 2025, addressed Parliament as part of his state visit to Ghana.
He lauded the success Ghana has so far chalked in its democratic trajectory, indicating it is something India holds in high esteem since it is a practice they introduced into governance.
Thanking Ghanaians on behalf of the people of India for the warm welcome given to him, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of democracy in running a smooth and proper governance.
“India is the mother of Democracy, and doesn’t take it lightly,” he said. He further stated that India and Ghana are embarking on certain projects for the mutual benefit of both countries.
“President Mahama and I have decided to elevate our ties with comprehensive partnerships. We need more G20 in our presidency, our global initiative lifestyle is one world, one life and one greed,” he disclosed.
Describing India as a pillar of strength and Ghana a beacon of hope, Modi lauded Ghana’s democratic efforts by projecting it above that of her peers in the sub-region, citing its ability to turn democratic challenges into fortunes.
On his part, the Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, extoled Prime Minister Modi for presiding over the largest democracy in the world with a population larger than that of the African continent.
“He is currently the Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world with 2,500 political parties and 22 official languages. He is the Prime Minister of a country whose population is more than the population of Africa,” Bagbin stated.
Before Modi’s address in Parliament, he had visited the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum where he laid a wreath on the tomb of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
