Nigerian forward Sadiq Umar, who was withdrawn from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to injury, is available for selection in the Spanish La Liga for Real Sociedad.

The 26-year-old was withdrawn from the tournament two days to the Super Eagles’ opener against Equatorial Guinea.

He was immediately replaced by Paul Onuachu, who played a part in Sunday’s 1-1 draw in Group A.

But days after returning to his club, Sadiq Umar trained with his team mates and is now available for selection for Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash against Osasuna Wednesday evening.

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro expressed surprise about the development when he was probed by journalists in a pre-match conference on Wednesday.

He said he received a report from the medical staff of the national team that Umar would be out for at least 15 days.

“We did a meeting with the player and our staff whether he wants to stay for which I chose him but in the last day, we decided to appraise him,” the Portuguese manager said.

“I am sad because he is not here to help us.”

Nigeria will play hosts Ivory Coast in their next game on Thursday before taking on Guinea-Bissau in their final group game.

The Super Eagles are seeking their fourth title at the tournament.
