Archbishop Dr. Charles Agyin-Asare, founder and leader of the Perez Chapel International, has today, Wednesday, January 17, 2023, explained the genesis of a statement he made about Nogokpo that stirred controversy in the country.

In May 2023, the man of God made a comment about the potency of a deity at a town in the Volta region, Nogokpo, which did not go down well with residents of the community, and to some extent, some in the region.

The authorities demanded that he retracted and rendered an apology which he eventually did, by indicating that he did not intend to cast a slur.

“In reference to Nogokpo, I wish to clarify that I never intended to refer to the town but an incident that happened after a crusade at Aflao. I had absolutely no intention to cast a slur upon the people of the Nogokpo Town and the Volta region as a whole,” he said Sunday, May 28, 2023.

Appearing on Maakye –the morning show on Onua TV/FM –Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the Archbishop narrated the incident which necessitated the reference he made to the deity that created the controversy.

“I went to do a crusade at Aflao. At this point there hadn’t been rain in the place for three years or so and they had rainmakers, they can make rain. And the chief comes the first night, the second night, and they decide to make rain because rain must not beat the chief and the chief had seen miracles so if rain beats him, it means that all we did was nothing. So it starts drizzling then I take the microphone, then I stop the rain.

“So the chief in talking said, “I saw miracles but that’s a small thing. Yesterday, he stopped the rain and the rain couldn’t fall” and then he says publicly, he says “when you’re going, please make sure it rains for us” and then I said it would. I leave the place Saturday morning, it rained from Saturday morning till Saturday night.  This was the meeting I held, I was talking and brought some things,” he disclosed to host, Captain Smart.

Find below the full statement he released on the issue when it occurred in 2023:

I have received calls but from people very close to me and my attention has been drawn to social media commentary on some portions of comments I made this past Thursday during the Supernatural Empowerment Summit here in the Perez Dome.

I was speaking on the divine protection we as Christians enjoy from God and was teaching congregants on the need to activate divine protection from demonic attacks. This is a cardinal principle of our faith as Charismatic Christians.

To drive home my point, I made reference to several instances where I have encountered manifestations of demonic powers in my crusades which have taken me to over 92 countries of the world. I gave an example of people who were seeking to levitate during a crusade in India. I gave an example of an attack I suffered as a very young Pastor who had gone to preach at a bus stop around Korle Bu.

In reference to Nogokpo, I wish to clarify that I never intended to refer to the town but an incident that happened after a crusade at Aflao. I had absolutely no intention to cast a slur upon the people of the Nogokpo Town and the Volta Region as a whole.

I have had a very cordial relationship with the people of the Volta Region. My wife of 38 years is an Ewe from Keta. And two of my sons bear Ewe names. All of the examples I gave were not intended to denigrate any of the towns and their people but to elucidate the principle of divine protection to congregants.

Any misrepresentation or misinformation that has characterised the subsequent commentary and reportage is regretted.
My Ministry over the past 40 years has been one that has spoken up at critical times in our Nation as a spiritual gatekeeper and I remain committed to serving God’s people and our Nation as the spirit directs.
