Ghana’s record top scorer Asamoah Gyan has revealed playing for Asante Kotoko before hanging his boots but was denied due to series of injuries.

The striker retired from football in 2023 after bringing his contract with Legon Cities to an end.

He disclosed in an interview with Captain Smart on Onua Maakye how his dream of playing for one of Ghana’s biggest clubs, Asante Kotoko, never materialized.

“I wanted to play for Kotoko before my retirement but injuries hampered my ambitions,” the former Liberty Professionals striker revealed.

Gyan made a return to the Ghana Premier League to join Legon Cities in 2020 but played a few games due to injuries and fitness issues.

“Even at Legon Cities, I opted to play a few minutes to gain full fitness. But once I gained fitness, injuries struck again. That was how I began thinking of retirement. I really wanted to play for Kotoko,” he added.

Asamoah Gyan started his professional in the Ghana Premier League with Liberty Professionals, scoring his first goals against Great Olympics.
